When is the Best Time of Year for Outdoor Family Portraits? | Long Island Family Photographer

So when is the best time of year for family photos? When you're investing a lot of your time and money into something as important as family photos you'll want to be sure you schedule your session during the best time of year. The answer is...

YOU CAN HAVE FAMILY PHOTOS TAKEN ANY TIME OF YEAR. INDOORS ALL YEAR LONG AND OUTDOORS SPRING/SUMMER OR FALL. I ONLY RESCHEDULE A SESSION IF IT'S ACTUALLY RAINING. CLOUDS OR SUNSHINE WORKS OUT GREAT.

A few things to consider when picking a timeframe for your outdoor photoshoot. What would you like to be wearing? Do you want lighter cloths or do you love to layer up? If you take your photos in the spring or summer you will most likely dress in clothing that fits the season. Typically brighter colors or pastels and more casual. If you have your photos taken in the fall or winter you may be wearing more layers, or using more rich and bold colors. It's best to think about what you prefer before you schedule.

For outdoor sessions we have to consider how long the days are in the summer. For the best light we try and schedule an hour or 2 before sunset. In the summer this can mean that your session may not start until around 6:30/7:00 pm. We always have to option of doing our session in the morning too if you have kids who are early risers. In the late fall the start time can be the late afternoon, sometimes as early as 3 pm.

It's also important to think about the type of location you would like your photos to take place. So you love the beach or do you prefer lots of greenery or even fall colors. For example, fall brings some amazing color so a park may be a better location. Summer sunsets on the beach are gorgeous and the beach can be quite cold in the fall.

Indoor photos can certainly take place all year round with no worry or concern about the weather. These sessions are more intimate and document not only your family but your surroundings as well. A beautiful way to capture your story.

SO THERE REALLY ISN’T A “BEST” TIME OF YEAR FOR PHOTOS. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU GET TO BE WITH YOUR FAMILY; PLAYING, LOVING, AND CONNECTING WITH THEM SO WE CAN CREATE IMAGES THAT TELL THE STORY OF YOU.
